The change in Chinese foreign direct investment into the United States since 2008 to 2020, can be explained by analyzing the different approaches President Obama and President Trump have taken regarding foreign investment. There is significant data that I have referenced to analyze US market accessibility, foreign investment priorities of each administration, and foreign investment policy enactments to explain the change in Chinese FDI. However, there is little research comparing these two presidential administration’s approaches and the explanations for the different Chinese FDI outcomes in each timeframe. My research seeks to explain the change in Chinese FDI peak during the Obama administration, to the rapid decrease just another presidential administration later. I use Mill’s Method of difference, a structured focused case comparison (SFCC), small-n study, and Type I examination method to organize and structure my research in order to compare the two cases with an in-depth analysis. The comparison of the two cases could explain future studies of presidential administration’s approaches to foreign investment and the fluctuations in foreign investment dollar ($) amounts.
